We are looking for a dedicated and experienced School Nurse to oversee the provision of medical care to our school community of approximately 480 students. You will work closely as part of a team to ensure a high quality service at all times.

The ideal candidate will be a Registered Nurse with current NMC registration. This is a busy and varied role and therefore the ability to prioritise and manage situations under pressure is essential. You will have experience of managing a team and will oversee the day-to-day running of the department. Previous experience in a school and of working with children of all ages is desirable. A degree of flexibility is essential for this role.

We are seeking applications from those looking for full or part time work. You will ideally work Monday to Friday, alongside our Health Care Assistants. There is some flexibility in terms of the number of hours, therefore please indicate on the application form the hours/days you are looking for. The position is term time only (35 weeks of the year inclusive of 5 INSET days), some work may be required during the holiday periods which will be paid.

Main Responsibilities:

The provision of medical care to students and staff on a daily basis:

  • Administering first aid to the school community
  • Ensuring the best possible medical care is available to both students and staff on an immediate / emergency care basis
  • Treating students and staff as appropriate with the aim of encouraging students to return to their normal timetable as soon as appropriate.
  • Where students returning to their normal timetable is unlikely or hazardous, arranging to get the student / person home safely or to alternative care, e.g. the individual’s GP or referral to a hospital.
  • Administering medication according to the Boundary Oak School Medicine Management Policy.
  • Performing necessary health checks to assist with medical decision making.
  • Liaison with parents and staff in accordance with school policies in relation to day to day issues regarding medical needs of the students.
  • Updating Medical protocols and records.
  • Maintenance of Medical Alert list.

The Nurse will have responsibility for the day to day management of the Medical Room:

  • Ensuring that the medical room is appropriately staffed, stocked and equipped.
  • Ensuring safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and medication.
  • Provision of first aid kits for school trips and fixtures and replacement of supplies.
  • Timely maintenance of student files, medical records and medical room attendance records.
  • Organisation of essential emergency medications on site other than the medical room. 

The Nurse will have responsibility for the day to day management of the medical needs of the boarders:

  • Daily handovers with boarding staff.
  • Registration of boarders with the local GP and arrangement of appointments where needed.
  • Meeting medical needs of boarders during the day including sick bay.

Coordinating immunisation programmes:

  • Liaising with local health authority in the organisation of immunisation programmes.
  • Arranging and managing communication with parents with regards to consent.

Liaison with pastoral staff with regard to any medical problems concerning students:

  • Development of Health Care plans where appropriate and support for relevant teaching staff in appropriate dealings with students in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities.
  • Regular meetings with pastoral staff to provide input and advice on effective pastoral care for particular students.
  • Drafting and updating of list of students in iSAMS with medical conditions, taking into consideration principles of confidentiality.
  • Providing general advice and training for staff for initial care of students with particular medical needs.
  • Liaison with Exams Officer to support students with Medical Needs. 

Providing support to academic staff in pastoral care and counselling:

  • The School Nurse will work closely with the School Counsellor and pastoral staff but at all times, exercise judgment regarding confidentiality within the framework of safeguarding and welfare of children.

Teaching of students and/or staff:

  • When requested, provision of first aid updates for members of staff, particularly PE/Games staff or those regularly involved in residential trips.
  • When requested, contributing materials / research to topics within PSHE/SRE schemes of work and / or assemblies as required.
  • Contribution to the school’s SRE programme.
  • As appropriate seeking to raise awareness of medical and health issues to students and staff throughout the School – this may be in distributing appropriate material (in content and age group suitability) via pastoral staff, establishing health issues notice boards / updates in different parts of the School, or in utilizing iSAMS and the bulletin.    

Involvement in Health and Safety issues:

  • Working with staff to ensure the timely completion of accident reports and following school policy in the submission of RIDDOR reports.
  • Medical contribution to the termly Head’s report.  

Administration:

  • Ensuring medical questionnaires and all relevant parental consent forms to administer / carry medicine etc. on entry to School and at agreed stages of school career are obtained and retained.
  • Assisting with the implementation and regular update of student health care plans.
  • Maintaining electronic records of daily visits to the medical room or accidents treated / reported, including the nature of problem, treatment / advice. Updating as necessary to ensure accurate and rapid retrieval of information.

General:

  • Occasionally providing cover for sports fixtures / other events as required during the school day.
  • Carry out such other duties within the postholder’s capabilities as may be reasonably requested from time to time. 

PERSON SPECIFICATION - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Registered Nurse (adult or child)

Experience in either school nursing experience; A&E experience; paediatric nursing experience, or experience in adolescent health.

Minimum 3 years post registration

Ability to work autonomously managing situations and making decisions as the highest qualified medical person on site. 

Computer literate. The medical room typically uses Word, Excel, and iSAMS MIS/database. 

Medically fit and able to cope with a physically demanding site. 

The ability to demonstrate an understanding of school protocols and policies and a full acceptance of the need for compliance. 

An exemplary attendance record in his/her present and previous employment. 

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children. 

Confident and calm when dealing with a range of accidents and first aid issues. 

Friendly, sympathetic and supportive personality. 

Energetic, motivated and enthusiastic. 

Committed to inclusive education. 


PERSON SPECIFICATION - DESIRABLE CRITERIA

Full Clean driving licence would be beneficial.

First aid qualification

Good working knowledge of Safeguarding issues. (Training will be provided on appointment if a refresher course is necessary).
