We are looking for a Science Laboratory Technician who will liaise with staff and prepare practical resources to support teaching and learning, manage and maintain equipment, stock materials and storage systems. The profile will support safe practice in managing hazards in the science department.

Key Responsibilities

1) Practical Preparation & Maintenance of science materials

Tasks and Duties:

  • Sterilising, calibrating and setting up lab equipment;
  • Monitoring and reporting on experiments when required;
  • Assisting in practical classes & carrying out demonstrations if needed;
  • Prepare equipment and materials required for demonstration and class practical work, practical tests & examinations;
  • Keep shared information with staff on practical work, resources & equipment available;
  • Ensure dirty glassware is cleaned and returned to labs in a regular and timely fashion;
  • Support staff to provide students with chemical & equipment requests for individual projects in ensuring that the classrooms are tidy and well stocked with resources: including sufficient clean glassware, working equipment in each laboratory as per planned timetable, lab essentials maintained in each lab (soap, kitchen towel, basic equipment, stationary);
  • Performing laboratory testing;
  • Giving technical advice to teachers;
  • Ensure special equipment and labs are properly cleaned and maintained at all times;
  • Performance of termly checks in classrooms, which involves the cleaning and replenishing of glassware and routine safety checks in each laboratory (checking of safety goggles, lab coats (cleaning and stocking, hand washing facilities, safety screens);
  • Performance of annual checks on Bunsen burners, probes, sensors, balances;
  • Removal of equipment and dirty glassware from labs and replenishment labs on a regular basis;
  • Support teachers on the most appropriate organisation of lab equipment and glassware and maintain the tidiness and organisation of each lab.

2) Maintenance of laboratory stock & equipment

Tasks and Duties:

  • Ensuring the availability of suitable materials and equipment;
  • Checking equipment and stock levels and ordering supplies as required;
  • Provide sourcing, costing and suggesting economic alternatives to maintain stock levels to purchasing office;
  • Labelling, sorting and storing lab samples;
  • Disposing of waste and storing lab equipment after use;
  • Conduct periodic inventory check of science equipment;
  • Keeping up-to-date records of stock;
  • Operate an efficient system of stacking, storing, transporting, distributing equipment;
  • Ongoing discussions with HOF (and teachers by extension) with respect to the needs of the department; creating purchase orders for materials and chemicals when appropriate.

3) Maintenance of a healthy & safe working environment

Tasks and Duties:

  • Ensuring the healthy and safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials through operating a system for labelling, use, disposal and inventory to meet Health & Safety policy requirements;
  • Ensuring the safe treatment & disposal of used materials including hazardous substances and responding to actual or potential hazards; checking and disposing of chemical materials based on expiry dates;
  • Checking fume cupboards, pressure vessels and first-aid kits; organizing routine electrical and other safety checks, repair and maintenance of relevant equipment i.e. microscopes;
  • End of year tiding and organisation of each lab ready for the safe shut down over the summer;
  • Practicing safe work methods, aligned with CLEAPSS to ensure the safest practical approach is employed;
  • Promoting a proper use of safety equipment;
  • Carrying out risk assessments for technician activities;
  • Actively contributing to the assessment, monitoring and review of both health & safety procedures and information resources;
  • keeping up to date with current procedures and practices through continuing professional development;
  • Contributing to a safe working and learning environment;
  • Actively participating to eliminate and minimise workplace risks;
  • Maintaining the safe storage, usage and inventory of hazardous substances, explosive precursors or radioactive substance (storage aligned with CLEAPSS guidance);
  • Ensure that staff are meeting the safety requirements & advice with respect to the quantities and concentrations of chemical use;
  • Attending department meetings if requested by the supervisor.

Your profile:

  • Bachelor degree (or equivalent);
  • High level of English;
  • Previous experience in International Schools would be a nice to have;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, negotiation, and mediation skills;
